Why choose a Minecraft Java server?

  • Plugins and mods

Java is the edition for Paper plugins, Fabric and Forge mods and large modpacks.

  • Every plan size, from 2 GB to 128 GB

Java plans go from 2 GB to 128 GB, more choice than for Bedrock.

  • Every server location

All three hosts offer Java servers in every location they have.

All three hosts let you change the server type and version in the panel later, so start with Paper and switch to Fabric or Forge when you add mods.

Types of Minecraft Java servers

There are three types of Minecraft Java servers: the vanilla server, Paper or Purpur for plugins, and Fabric, Forge or NeoForge for mods:

  • Vanilla, the official server jar, for Minecraft exactly as Mojang made it.
  • Paper and Purpur, which are faster than vanilla and support plugins.
  • Fabric, Forge and NeoForge, for mods and modpacks.

All three hosts we compare let you choose the server type and the Minecraft version when you order, and you can change both later in the panel.

Which Java version does a Minecraft server need?

Minecraft 1.20.5 and newer need Java 21, versions 1.18 to 1.20.4 need Java 17, 1.17 needs Java 16, and 1.16.5 and older run on Java 8. A Minecraft Java server runs on Java, and each Minecraft version needs this minimum Java version. Modpacks for old versions often still need Java 8. If a server refuses to start after you change the Minecraft version, check the Java version in your panel first.

Minecraft Java or Bedrock server?

Choose a Minecraft Java server if your whole group plays on PC, because Java gives you the most freedom. Java Edition runs on Windows, macOS and Linux and is the edition for plugins, mods and modpacks. Bedrock Edition runs on phones, tablets, consoles and Windows, with add-ons from the Marketplace or the community instead of mods. If anyone plays on a phone or a console, choose a crossplay server so both editions can join, or a Bedrock server if nobody plays Java at all.

Before you buy a Minecraft Java server

  1. Choose the server type

Paper for plugins, Fabric for light mods, and Forge or NeoForge for large mods and modpacks.

  2. Check the processor

A Java server runs farms, redstone and mobs on one main thread, so a fast core keeps the game smooth.

  3. Choose a nearby region

Host the server close to most of your players to keep the ping low.

Questions about Minecraft Java server hosting

Which Java server type should I choose?

Paper for plugins or a faster vanilla server, Fabric for light mods and performance mods, and Forge or NeoForge for large mods and modpacks.

What Java version does a Minecraft 1.21 server need?

Java 21. Every Minecraft version from 1.20.5 onwards needs Java 21. Versions 1.18 to 1.20.4 need Java 17, and 1.16.5 and older run on Java 8.

Can I change the Minecraft version of my server later?

Yes, in the server panel at all three hosts. Make a backup first: a world opened in a newer version cannot safely go back to an older one, and plugins or mods need versions that match the new Minecraft version.

How much does a Minecraft Java server cost?

A Minecraft Java server costs from €1.60 a month for 2 GB at Cheapest Minecraft Hosting. An 8 GB server for about ten players with plugins costs €6.40 there, €12.95 on the standard line at Lodehost and €15.95 on the Performance line.

Does it cost money to make a Minecraft Java server?

The server software is free: Mojang offers the official Java server as a free download, and Paper, Fabric and Forge are free as well. You can run it on your own computer at no cost, but then that computer has to stay on and you have to open a port on your router. A hosted server that stays online costs from €3.20 a month for 4 GB.

Where do I download the Minecraft Java server?

Mojang publishes the official server jar on minecraft.net, and Paper, Fabric, Forge and NeoForge each offer theirs on their own sites. On a hosted plan you do not download anything: you pick the type and version in the panel and the host installs it.
