Why consoles have no Add Server button
Consoles have no Add Server button because Minecraft on Xbox, PlayStation and Switch only lists the featured servers, Mojang's partner servers, in the Servers tab, and an outside server cannot be added there. Phones, tablets and Windows PCs do have the button. The 3 ways in below each borrow a part of the game that consoles do have: the Servers tab, the Friends tab or the list of LAN games.
How to join a Minecraft server on Xbox
To join a Minecraft server on Xbox, change the console's DNS so that a featured server opens the BedrockConnect server list, then type your server's address there. BedrockConnect is free and open source, and its GitHub page lists the DNS addresses below as of October 2026:
- Open the DNS settings: Profile & system, Settings, General, Network settings, Advanced settings, DNS settings, Manual.
- Enter the DNS servers: 104.238.130.180 as primary and 8.8.8.8 as secondary.
- Open a featured server: in Minecraft, go to the Servers tab and join one that BedrockConnect can redirect, such as The Hive, Lifeboat, Mineville, Enchanted or Galaxite. The BedrockConnect list opens instead.
- Add your server with its address and port, 19132 unless your host gave you another, and join. The list remembers it for next time.
While the DNS is set, every name the console looks up goes through that DNS server, so switch it back to Automatic when you no longer need it.
How to join Minecraft servers on PS5 and PS4
To join Minecraft servers on PS5 and PS4, use the same BedrockConnect method with the address its GitHub page gives for PlayStation: 45.55.68.52 as primary DNS and 8.8.8.8 as secondary.
- PS5: Settings, Network, Settings, Set Up Internet Connection, then your connection, Advanced Settings and DNS Settings, Manual.
- PS4: Settings, Network, Set Up Internet Connection, your connection type, Custom, then Automatic for the IP address, Do Not Specify for the DHCP host name and Manual for the DNS settings.
Then open a featured server in the Servers tab, and the BedrockConnect list opens where you add your server's address and port.
How to add servers on Minecraft Switch
To add servers on Minecraft Switch, set the console's DNS to 104.238.130.180 with 8.8.8.8 as secondary, then open a featured server to reach the BedrockConnect list. The DNS menu is in System Settings, Internet, Internet Settings: pick your network, choose Change Settings, then DNS Settings and Manual. Nintendo's own help pages show the same menu on the Switch 2.
Join from the Friends tab with MCXboxBroadcast
Joining from the Friends tab works on every console without a DNS change, but the server owner sets it up. MCXboxBroadcast signs in with an Xbox account and shows your server to that account's friends as a game they can join:
- Install it as an extension in the extensions folder of Geyser, or run the standalone version next to a Bedrock server and put its address and port in config.yml.
- Sign in with the code it prints, at microsoft.com/link, using the account that will show the server.
- Players add that account as a friend and find the server on the Friends tab, ready to join.
Its makers advise a second account for this, because the tool imitates parts of the game client in a way that may break the terms of service, and the account could be banned.
Join as a LAN game with the BedrockTogether app
BedrockTogether is a free third-party app for iOS and Android that makes your server show up on a console as a LAN game. Type the server's address and port in the app on a phone on the same Wi-Fi, press Run, and the server appears under LAN games on the Friends tab of the console. It needs no change on the console, but the phone has to stay on the same network while you connect, and its App Store listing says Switch is not supported at the moment.
Can console players join a Java server?
Console players can join a Java server only through Geyser, which lets Bedrock players into a Paper server. They use the Bedrock port that Geyser listens on, with any of the 3 ways above, and play next to Java players in one world. Java mods stay out of reach for them, but plugins work for everyone. See Minecraft crossplay hosting for the plans and the setup.
Can you make a Minecraft server on Xbox, PlayStation or Switch?
You cannot make a Minecraft server on Xbox, PlayStation or Switch, because Mojang's Bedrock Dedicated Server runs on Windows and Ubuntu only. A console can host a world for friends from the game, but that world closes when its owner stops playing. For a world that stays online, start a Realm from the game or rent a Bedrock server: up to five players need about 4 GB, from €3.20 a month at Cheapest Minecraft Hosting.
Realms or your own server for console players?
Realms or your own server comes down to the way in: a Realm needs no workaround, because players join by invite on every console, while your own server needs one of the 3 ways above for each console player. A Bedrock Realm costs US$3.99 a month for you and 2 friends online, and US$7.99 for you and 10. Your own server holds more players, runs add-ons and, with Geyser, Java players and plugins too. The price comparison is on Minecraft Realms alternatives.
