Every player keeps the chunks within this distance loaded. Minecraft's default is 10; 8 saves memory on a busy server.

A resource, creative or minigame world next to the overworld, the Nether and the End adds about 1 GB.

Every step up adds about 1 GB for the plugins and their data.

How much RAM does a Minecraft server need?

A small vanilla Minecraft server for a few friends needs about 4 GB of RAM, a plugin server for ten players about 7 GB and a large modpack for five players about 13 GB, so a 16 GB plan. The exact amount depends on the server software, the loaded chunks, your plugins and mods, and how much your players explore.

How this calculator estimates Minecraft server RAM

The calculator starts with a baseline for the server itself, adds an allowance for the players online at the same time and rounds up to a whole gigabyte. With plugins, the allowance is 1 GB for every two players.

2 GBServer baseline
Players ÷ 2Player allowance

Example: 2 GB + (10 ÷ 2) GB = 7 GB → 8 GB plan

Java plans come in fixed sizes, so a 7 GB estimate means an 8 GB plan. The cheapest 8 GB plan we compare is CheapestMinecraftHosting Plus at €6.40 a month. On the standard line, Lodehost Starter and Astroworld Starter both cost €12.95, and Astroworld Starter Performance costs €15.95 with reserved Ryzen 9 threads.

What uses RAM on a Minecraft server?

  • Floating Minecraft islands with trees, a path and a waterfall: the loaded chunks around players

    Loaded chunks and view distance

Every player keeps the chunks around them loaded. A higher view distance, and players exploring in different directions, keep more of the world in memory.

  • Two puzzle pieces with a gear and a plug beside a server: plugins and mods on a Minecraft server

    Plugins, mods and modpacks

Each plugin and mod adds its own data. A plugin server needs more memory per player than vanilla, and a large modpack needs about 8 GB before anyone joins.

  • A Minecraft farm with crops, villagers, sheep, chests and redstone beside a house: activity in a busy world

    Farms, mobs and redstone

Farms, mobs, villagers and redstone machines add entities and block updates to the loaded chunks, so a busy world that has run for months uses more memory than a new one.

How the Minecraft RAM calculator works

A Minecraft server needs memory before anyone joins: for the area around spawn, the server software itself and Java. After that, every player loads chunks around them, and every plugin or mod adds its own share. So the calculation is a base amount, plus a little extra for each player:

  • Vanilla: 2 GB base, then 1 GB per 3 players
  • Plugins: 2 GB base, then 1 GB per 2 players
  • Modded: 5 GB base, then 1 GB per 2 players
  • Modpack: 8 GB base, then 1 GB per player

Count the busiest moment, not the average. If twenty players are on your whitelist but never more than ten are online at the same time, you need a server for ten players. Bedrock servers are sized like vanilla servers, because Bedrock uses add-ons instead of Java mods. Crossplay servers start at 4 GB. On a plugin server, 10 to 25 plugins add 1 GB, 25 to 50 add 2 GB, 50 to 100 add 3 GB and more than 100 add 4 GB.

The Advanced settings make the estimate more specific. The player allowance assumes the default view distance of 10 chunks: at 16 chunks it is about 1.7 times as large, and at 6 chunks about 0.7 times. Farms and redstone add 1 GB, a web map 1 GB and every extra world, such as a creative or resource world, another 1 GB. On a modded server, 100 to 200 mods add 1 GB and more than 200 add 2 GB. Room to grow puts a quarter on top of the total, for a world that will keep growing for months.

Modpacks vary the most. The Modpack column is for a large kitchen-sink pack of around 300 mods, which starts at 8 GB. A light modpack of about 100 mods starts at 6 GB, a pack of about 200 mods at 7 GB and an expert pack at 10 GB, each plus 1 GB per player. If the modpack's own page recommends a server size, use whichever number is higher.

How to tell if your Minecraft server needs more RAM

  • The server freezes for a second every now and then, and then catches up.
  • The console shows out of memory errors, or the server stops by itself.
  • The panel shows memory usage at the maximum all the time.

If the lag comes with high CPU usage instead, the cause is the processor or something on the server, such as a farm or a plugin, not the memory.

Minecraft RAM calculator questions

Is 8 GB enough for a Minecraft server?

Yes, 8 GB is enough for most small Minecraft servers. By the rule this calculator uses, 8 GB runs about 18 players on vanilla, 12 players with plugins and 6 players on a modded server. A large modpack needs about 8 GB before anyone joins, so 8 GB is not enough there, and a light modpack fits only two players. See 8 GB Minecraft server hosting for the plans.

Does more RAM improve Minecraft server performance?

Yes, but only until your Minecraft server has enough RAM. After that, adding more RAM does not make it faster; the processor does. Too much memory can even make Java's garbage collection pauses longer. Choose the size that fits with a little room to spare, and a Performance plan if your server lags.

How much RAM does a modpack need?

A large modpack with around 300 mods needs about 8 GB before anyone joins, plus about 1 GB per player: 12 GB for four players, 18 GB for ten, which means a 24 GB plan, and 28 GB for twenty, which means a 32 GB plan. A light modpack of about 100 mods starts at 6 GB, a pack of about 200 mods at 7 GB and an expert pack at 10 GB; the Advanced settings of the calculator have a slider for it. More on modpack server hosting.

How much RAM does a Minecraft server need for 10 players?

A Minecraft server for 10 players needs about 5.3 GB of RAM on vanilla, 7 GB with plugins, 10 GB on a modded server and 18 GB with a large modpack. Java plans come in fixed sizes, so that means an 8 GB plan for vanilla and for plugins, 12 GB for a modded server and 24 GB for the modpack.

What if my server needs more RAM later?

Upgrade to a bigger plan. All three hosts let you upgrade your Minecraft server and keep your world, plugins and server address; the server only restarts once.
