A processor, a pair of scales and a server: comparing Minecraft hosting prices

The short answer

Most Minecraft servers for a group of friends cost €3.20 to €12.80 a month. That buys 4 GB for five friends on vanilla up to 16 GB for a big modpack at Cheapest Minecraft Hosting. The same sizes cost more where daily backups or reserved CPU threads are included, and a Realm costs US$3.99 or US$7.99 a month.

Minecraft server price comparison

This Minecraft server price comparison puts the three cheapest 8 GB plans side by side, the size ten players with plugins need, all on a Ryzen 9 7950X in Poland. Each host's plan for 6 to 10 players with plugins on Java in Poland (Warsaw), starting with the lowest price, with the price paying monthly and on the longest term.

On the Performance lines the large price is what a new customer pays a month at the start: for the first 3 months at both Astroworld Hosting and Lodehost, when you pay monthly. The regular monthly price comes after it, and the last price in each row is the monthly price on the host's longest term.

What decides the cost of a Minecraft server?

3 things decide what a Minecraft server costs: how much RAM it has, whether its CPU threads are shared or reserved, and where it runs.

  • The RAM

Prices follow the gigabytes: €0.80 per GB at Cheapest Minecraft Hosting, and €1 to €2 per GB at the other two, less per GB on bigger plans.

  • Shared or reserved CPU

Reserved Ryzen 9 threads on the Performance line cost about €2 per GB at every size. The shared standard line drops to about €1 per GB from 24 GB.

  • The location

A city or another continent costs more: 4 GB on Astroworld Hosting's standard line is €7.95 in Germany and €14.70 in Paris.

You pay for the RAM, not for the players, so a full server costs the same as an empty one and the price per player falls as the group grows.

Minecraft server cost per month by RAM

A Minecraft server costs €1.60 a month for 2 GB and €51.20 for 64 GB at Cheapest Minecraft Hosting, which charges €0.80 per GB at every size. At Lodehost and Astroworld Hosting the price per GB falls as the plans get bigger, and daily backups are included:

At 4 GB the Performance line, with reserved Ryzen 9 threads, costs the same €7.95 as the standard line at both hosts. From 8 GB it costs about €2 per GB, against about €1 to €1.60 per GB on the standard line.

Minecraft server cost by number of players

A Minecraft server for 5 players costs from €3.20 a month on vanilla, for 10 players from €6.40 with plugins and for 20 players from €9.60 with plugins, because the price follows the RAM the group needs:

Every lowest price is at Cheapest Minecraft Hosting. With daily backups included, the standard line at Lodehost and Astroworld Hosting costs €12.95 for 8 GB and €23.95 for 24 GB. A bigger group pays less per head: ten players with plugins pay €0.64 each, a hundred about €0.51.

How much does a Minecraft Realm cost?

A Minecraft Realm costs US$3.99 a month for Realms on Bedrock, with you and 2 friends online at once, and US$7.99 a month for Realms Plus on Bedrock or a Java Realm, with you and 10 others online, in the US store. Friends play for free, you can invite up to 10,000 of them, and a 30-day free trial comes first.

Per player, a full Java Realm of 11 costs about US$0.73 each. An 8 GB server for the same 11 players with plugins costs €6.40 a month, about €0.58 each, and it runs plugins, mods and Java with Bedrock in one world, which a Realm cannot. When you stop paying for a Realm, you have 18 months to download its worlds. The full comparison is on Minecraft Realms alternatives.

How much does it cost to run a Minecraft server from home?

Running a Minecraft server from home costs nothing for the software, so the cost is the power the PC uses: watts times hours, divided by 1,000, is the kWh, and the kWh times your price per kWh is the cost. Two examples at €0.30 per kWh:

  • Evenings only: a PC that draws 60 watts for 4 hours a day uses 7.2 kWh in 30 days, which costs €2.16.
  • Around the clock: the same PC running 24/7 uses about 43 kWh in 30 days, about €13, more than the 8 GB plan above.

A plug-in power meter shows what your own PC draws. A home server also has costs that money does not fix: it is offline when the PC is off, your upload speed caps how many players it serves, and every player sees your home IP address. The steps are in how to make a Minecraft server.

How much does a modded Minecraft server cost?

A modded Minecraft server costs from €6.40 a month for up to five players with a few Fabric or Forge mods, and from €12.80 for a big modpack such as All the Mods 10, because mods need RAM before anyone joins:

  • Your own mods on Fabric, Forge or NeoForge: about 8 GB for five players and 10 GB for ten, so €6.40 and €9.60 at the cheapest host.
  • A light modpack: about 11 GB for five players, so a 12 GB plan at €9.60.
  • A large pack like ATM10: about 13 GB for five players and 18 GB for ten, so €12.80 for 16 GB or €19.20 for 24 GB.

A big pack also runs its machines on one main thread, which is where reserved CPU threads earn their price. See modpack server hosting and ATM10 server hosting for the plans.

How much does a Minecraft Bedrock server cost?

A Minecraft Bedrock server costs from €1.60 a month for 2 GB at Cheapest Minecraft Hosting, which charges the same for Java, Bedrock and crossplay at every size. A Bedrock world needs about as much RAM as vanilla Java: about 4 GB for five players and 6 GB for ten. Astroworld Hosting sells Bedrock plans from €5.95 for 2 GB, and a crossplay plan, with Java and Bedrock players in one world, costs €2.00 a month more than the Java plan of the same size at Astroworld Hosting and Lodehost.

How much does a 24/7 Minecraft server cost?

A 24/7 Minecraft server costs the same as any paid plan, from €1.60 a month for 2 GB, because paid hosts keep every server running day and night. Free hosts stop a server when nobody is online, and a server on your own PC pays for power every hour it runs: about €13 a month in the 24/7 example above. More on servers that never stop: 24/7 Minecraft server hosting.

Before you pay for a Minecraft server

Before you pay for a Minecraft server, check 3 things that change what it really costs you each month:

  1. Size it for the busiest hour

Buy the RAM for the most players online at once. A plan one size too small saves a few euros and costs you lag every evening.

  2. Compare monthly with monthly

A 24 month price is lower per month but paid up front, and a welcome price ends after the first months.

  3. Add up the extras

Count backups, a setup fee and a location surcharge into the monthly price before you compare two hosts.

Questions about Minecraft server costs

How much does a Minecraft server cost per month?

From €1.60 for 2 GB to €51.20 for 64 GB at Cheapest Minecraft Hosting, which charges €0.80 per GB. Most groups of friends need 4 to 16 GB, so €3.20 to €12.80 a month. On the standard line at Lodehost and Astroworld Hosting, with daily backups included, 4 GB costs €7.95 and 8 GB €12.95.

Is a Minecraft server cheaper than Realms?

For more than three players, yes: a Java Realm costs US$7.99 a month for 11 players online, and an 8 GB server for the same group costs €6.40. For three Bedrock players, a Realm at US$3.99 and a 4 GB server at €3.20 cost about the same, but only the server runs plugins, mods and crossplay.

How much does a Minecraft server cost for 100 players?

About 52 GB of RAM with plugins by our rule, so a 64 GB plan: €51.20 a month at Cheapest Minecraft Hosting and €62.95 on Astroworld Hosting's standard line. A public server that size also wants reserved CPU threads, and 64 GB on the Performance line costs €124.95. See Minecraft hosting for 100 players.

Why do Minecraft servers with the same RAM cost different amounts?

Because the RAM is only part of the plan. Reserved CPU threads cost more than a shared processor, daily backups are included at some hosts and extra at others, the storage differs, and some locations carry a surcharge: 4 GB on Astroworld Hosting's standard line costs €7.95 in Germany, €9.95 in US East and €14.70 in Paris.

Is there a setup fee for a Minecraft server?

Only at Astroworld Hosting, and only when you pay monthly: a one-time €2.99 on the standard line and on the 4 GB Performance plan, or €3.29 for a Bedrock plan on the standard line. There is no setup fee at Lodehost or at Cheapest Minecraft Hosting.

Is it cheaper to pay for a longer term?

At Lodehost and Astroworld Hosting, yes: on the 24 month term, 4 GB costs €6.95 a month instead of €7.95, but you pay the whole term up front. Cheapest Minecraft Hosting charges the same on every term, so paying monthly costs nothing extra there.

Do new customers pay less for a Minecraft server?

On the Performance line, yes. New customers get 60% off in Poland: 8 GB costs €6.38 a month instead of €15.95 for the first 3 months at both Astroworld Hosting and Lodehost when you pay monthly. The standard line and Cheapest Minecraft Hosting have no welcome discount.

How much does it cost to host a Minecraft server for friends?

For five friends on vanilla, €3.20 a month for 4 GB, or €0.64 each when you split it. Ten friends with plugins need 8 GB at €6.40, €0.64 each. Ways to share the bill are on the best Minecraft hosting for friends.
