How much RAM does a Minecraft server need for 100 players?
With plugins, a hundred players need about 52 GB by our rule, so you need a 64 GB plan. A vanilla server needs about 36 GB and fits on 48 GB. Modded servers with a hundred players are rare, and for good reason: a modded server would need around 55 GB, and a large modpack more than 100 GB.
| Players online | Vanilla | Plugins | Modded | Modpack |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 51 to 75 | 27 GB | 40 GB | 43 GB | 83 GB |
| 76 to 100 | 36 GB | 52 GB | 55 GB | 108 GB |
| 101 to 150 | 52 GB | 77 GB | 80 GB | 158 GB |

One big Minecraft server or a server network?
In our opinion, a server for a hundred players should usually be a network. One 64 GB server has one main thread, and every player, mob and farm shares it. If you split the same players over a lobby and two game servers behind a Velocity proxy, each world gets its own thread. A crash on one server does not kick everyone, and you can restart the survival world without closing the lobby.
The 48 GB and 64 GB plans are still useful while you grow, because one big world is easier to run than three. Once your player count is stable, split it up. Astroworld Hosting can put two to six of your servers behind a single address, with one of them as the lobby, so players keep using the same address.
Where to host a Minecraft server for 100 players
For a Minecraft server with 100 players, choose the region where most of them live and accept a higher ping for the rest, because a hundred players are rarely all in one country. Astroworld Hosting offers the most locations, 27 in total: Germany, Poland, the UK, three US regions, Japan, Singapore, India, Sydney and seventeen more cities from Amsterdam to New York, although most of those cities stop at 24 GB. The table below shows what 48 GB and 64 GB cost in the US.
| RAM you need | Astroworld | Lodehost |
|---|---|---|
| 24 GB | Premium €30.45 a month | Premium €30.45 a month |
| 48 GB | Ultimate €58.95 a month | Ultimate €58.95 a month |
| 64 GB | Enterprise €80.45 a month | Dedicated (96 GB) €116.95 a month |
Can Folia hold 100 players on one Minecraft server?
In theory, yes. Folia is a version of Paper, made by the PaperMC team, that splits the world into regions and runs them on several processor cores at the same time, so one world can hold far more players than on Paper. In practice most plugins do not work on Folia, and some vanilla mechanics behave differently, so it suits large servers that write their own plugins. For most communities of a hundred players, a Paper network behind Velocity is still the safer choice.
How much RAM each server in a Minecraft network needs
In a network, every server gets the memory for its own job, and you size each one with the same rule as a single server: 2 GB plus 1 GB for every two players on Paper with plugins. A survival server with sixty players online needs about 32 GB, so a 32 GB plan. A minigame server with forty players needs about 22 GB, so 24 GB. A lobby needs much less than the rule suggests, because nobody builds farms or explores there, and the Velocity proxy itself needs very little memory.
