What does Purpur add to a Minecraft server?

Purpur adds 3 things to a Minecraft server: support for every Paper plugin, hundreds of gameplay settings in purpur.yml and the speed of Paper.

  • Every Paper plugin

Purpur is built on Paper, so plugins made for Paper, Spigot and Bukkit run on it.

  • Gameplay settings

purpur.yml changes mobs, items and players without a plugin for every small tweak.

  • Paper's speed

With its options left alone, Purpur performs like Paper.

Purpur only adds options, so a Paper world, its plugins and its settings move to Purpur unchanged.

What is a Purpur Minecraft server?

A Purpur Minecraft server runs Purpur, a fork of Paper that adds the gameplay and configuration options Paper leaves out. It keeps Paper's performance work and plugin support, and adds a purpur.yml file with settings for mobs, items, blocks and players. Server owners use it to change how the game plays without writing or installing a plugin for every small tweak.

Purpur vs Paper: which should you run?

Run Purpur when you want to change gameplay from a config file, and Paper when you do not. Both run the same plugins and read the same world. Purpur builds on each Paper release, so a new Minecraft version can reach Paper a little earlier; if you want to update on the first day, Paper is the safer choice. A comparison with Spigot as well is on Paper Minecraft server hosting.

Purpur settings worth knowing

The Purpur settings worth knowing are in purpur.yml, which the server creates on its first start:

  • Rideable mobs. Many mobs can be made rideable and controllable, switched on one mob at a time.
  • Spawners. Let players pick up spawners with a silk touch tool.
  • Settings per mob, from how fast it moves to whether it can break blocks.
  • Player settings, such as the idle timeout for players who are away and how much experience drops on death.

Change one setting at a time and restart, so you know what each one does. Every option is listed in the Purpur documentation.

How to make a Purpur server

To make a Purpur server, pick Purpur as the server type and add plugins once it runs:

  1. Order a plan with enough RAM for your players and plugins.
  2. Choose Purpur as the server software in the panel. All three hosts list it next to Paper and Spigot.
  3. Pick the Minecraft version your plugins support, and start the server once so it writes purpur.yml.
  4. Install plugins from the panel or upload them to the plugins folder, then change the Purpur settings you want.

How much RAM does a Purpur server need?

A Purpur server needs about 5 GB of RAM for five players, 7 GB for ten and 12 GB for twenty with a few plugins, the same as Paper, because it runs the same engine. Extra Purpur options cost little memory; plugins, a web map and extra worlds cost more.

Best Purpur server hosting plans

The best Purpur server hosting for ten players is an 8 GB plan, on reserved threads if your settings add mobs or farms:

For 6 to 10 players with a few plugins on Java in Poland (Warsaw), the finder recommends Lodehost Starter: 8 GB, AMD Ryzen 9 7950X, DDR5, for €15.95 a month when you pay monthly. As a new customer you pay €6.38 for the first month, 60% off. The best plans at the other two hosts are Astroworld Starter Performance at €15.95 and CheapestMinecraftHosting Plus at €6.40.

Before you buy a Purpur server

Before you buy a Purpur server, check 3 things: which Purpur options you will switch on, whether your Paper settings carry over and whether you have a backup from before the switch.

  1. Switch on what you use

Some Purpur options add load of their own, so change one setting at a time.

  2. Keep Paper's settings

Purpur reads paper-global.yml and paper-world-defaults.yml too, so your Paper tuning carries over.

  3. Back up before you switch

Make a backup before you change a Paper server to Purpur, as before any change of server software.

Questions about Purpur server hosting

Is Purpur better than Paper?

Not faster, but more configurable. Purpur is Paper with extra gameplay options in purpur.yml. With those options left alone it performs like Paper.

Do Paper plugins work on Purpur?

Yes. Purpur is a fork of Paper, so plugins made for Paper, Spigot and Bukkit run on it.

Can I switch from Paper to Purpur?

Yes. Purpur reads the same world, plugins and Paper settings. Back up the world, change the server type to Purpur in the panel and restart.

Is Purpur free?

Yes. Purpur is free and open source. You pay for the server it runs on, and all three hosts we compare offer Purpur as server software.

How much does a Purpur server cost?

An 8 GB Purpur server for ten players costs €6.40 a month at Cheapest Minecraft Hosting and €12.95 at Lodehost in Germany.

Can I turn on TNT duping on a Purpur server?

Yes. Purpur is built on Paper, which blocks TNT, carpet and rail duping by default. Set allow-piston-duplication to true under unsupported-settings in config/paper-global.yml and restart the server. That setting does not cover sand duping.

Where do I download Purpur?

From purpurmc.org, which has builds from Minecraft 1.14.1 up to 26.3, the newest version in October 2026. On a hosted plan you do not download it: you choose Purpur as the server software in the panel, and the host installs it with the matching Java version.

Can a Purpur server run mods?

No. Purpur loads plugins, like Paper and Spigot, not Fabric, Forge or NeoForge mods. For mods, choose one of those loaders instead; players then install the same mods, which plugins never ask of them.
