What is a Fabric server?
A Fabric server is a Minecraft Java server that runs the Fabric mod loader, so it can load Fabric mods. Fabric is small and quick to update: it usually supports a new Minecraft version within days, which makes it the loader of choice if you want to play the newest release with mods. It is strong on performance mods, on light and medium modpacks and on vanilla plus, the normal game with a few extras. A mod is built for one loader, so a Fabric mod does not run on Forge or the other way round.
How to make a Fabric server
To make a Fabric server, start with the Minecraft version, because every mod on your list has to support it:
- Pick the Minecraft version your mods share. Look each mod up on Modrinth or CurseForge and choose a version all of them support.
- Set the server software to Fabric when you order, or switch an existing server in the panel's settings. The hosts set the matching Java version with it, Java 21 for 1.20.5 to 1.21.x and Java 25 from 26.1.
- Install Fabric API and your mods from the panel's mod search, or upload them to the
modsfolder. - Start the server and read the console. A missing library mod is named there. Then give your players the same mod list.
How to install Fabric server mods
The easiest way to install Fabric server mods is the mod search in your host's panel. Lodehost's Mods tab searches Modrinth, only shows mods with a Fabric build for your exact Minecraft version that run on a server, and installs up to twenty required dependencies in the same click, so Fabric API comes along by itself. Every file is checked against its SHA-512 before it lands in the mods folder. Cheapest Minecraft Hosting's Mods tab installs each mod in the version that matches your loader, and Astroworld Hosting installs mods from Modrinth too. A mod that is not on Modrinth goes in through the file manager.
Leave client-only mods off the server. Minimaps, shader loaders and menu mods do nothing on a server and can stop it from starting.
Best Fabric server performance mods
The best Fabric server performance mods make the server lighter without changing the game, and they are the main reason to choose Fabric for a near vanilla world:
- Lithium speeds up game logic such as mob AI, block ticking and collisions.
- FerriteCore cuts the memory that blocks and models use.
- Krypton makes the network stack lighter with many players online.
- Chunky pre-generates the world, so exploring players do not make the server generate chunks on the fly.
- spark shows what takes time in each tick, so you fix the real cause of lag.
How much RAM does a Fabric server need?
A Fabric server needs about 4 GB of RAM for five players and 6 GB for ten when it runs only performance mods, because the game stays close to vanilla. With mods that add blocks, items and mobs, it needs about 8 GB for five players, 10 GB for ten and 15 GB for twenty. A Fabric modpack with a hundred mods or more needs more again; see Minecraft modpack server hosting.
| Players online | RAM needed | Plan size | Lowest price for that size |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2 to 5 | 8 GB | 8 GB | CheapestMinecraftHosting Plus, €6.40 a month in Poland (Warsaw) |
| 6 to 10 | 10 GB | 12 GB | CheapestMinecraftHosting Builder, €9.60 a month in Poland (Warsaw) |
| 11 to 20 | 15 GB | 16 GB | CheapestMinecraftHosting Pro, €12.80 a month in Poland (Warsaw) |
Can a Fabric server use plugins?
No, a Fabric server cannot use Bukkit, Spigot or Paper plugins. Fabric loads mods, and plugins need Paper, Purpur or Spigot. For many plugin jobs there are server-side Fabric mods instead, for example for permissions, claims or homes, and players do not need to install those. If your server depends on plugins such as EssentialsX or LuckPerms on Paper, choose Paper server hosting.
Best Fabric server hosting plans
The best Fabric server hosting for ten players is a 12 GB plan with content mods, or 8 GB with only performance mods.
For 6 to 10 players with mods on Java in Poland (Warsaw), the finder recommends Lodehost Standard: 12 GB, AMD Ryzen 9 7950X, DDR5, for €23.95 a month when you pay monthly. As a new customer you pay €9.58 for the first month, 60% off. The best plans at the other two hosts are Astroworld Standard Performance at €23.95 and CheapestMinecraftHosting Builder at €9.60.
