What does a vanilla Minecraft server need?

  • The least RAM of any setup

Five friends need 4 GB, ten players fit on an 8 GB plan and twenty players need about 9 GB, so 12 GB.

  • The official server jar or Paper

Paper runs lighter and players see the same game. Technical players often prefer the official server jar.

  • A low monthly price

Vanilla runs well on the cheapest plans, such as Cheapest Minecraft Hosting at EUR 0.80 per GB.

A vanilla server needs the least RAM of any setup, so spend what you save on a location close to your players.

How much RAM does a vanilla Minecraft server need?

A vanilla Minecraft server needs about 2 GB of RAM for the server, plus 1 GB for every three players. Five friends need about 3.7 GB, so 4 GB, ten players need about 5.3 GB and fit on an 8 GB plan, because none of the three hosts sells a 6 GB Java plan, and twenty players need about 8.7 GB, so a 12 GB plan. Vanilla or Paper for your Minecraft server?

For most groups we recommend Paper, and for technical Minecraft the official server jar. Many servers that call themselves vanilla actually run Paper without any gameplay plugins. Players see the same game, and the server runs noticeably lighter. The downside is redstone: Paper changes a few game mechanics, so some technical builds, such as certain duplication glitches and farms, behave differently. That is why technical players stick to the official server jar.

The cheapest 8 GB plan for a vanilla group is CheapestMinecraftHosting Plus at €6.40 a month.

How to add datapacks to a Minecraft server

To add a datapack to a Minecraft server, put it in the datapacks folder of your world and run /reload or restart the server. That way a vanilla server can still change the game. A datapack adds recipes, new rules, custom loot or small features such as more mobs dropping their heads, and it runs on the vanilla server and on Paper alike. Players do not need to install anything, which makes datapacks the easiest way to give a vanilla server a twist without turning it into a modded server.

How to update a vanilla Minecraft server

When Mojang releases a new version of Minecraft, the official server software is available on the same day, so a vanilla server can update right away. Paper usually follows a little later, once its team has updated and tested it. Before any update, make a backup: a world that has been opened in a newer version cannot safely go back to an older one. Players also need the same version as the server, so agree on the day you update.

Before you buy a vanilla Minecraft server

  1. Official jar or Paper

Paper runs lighter; technical players who rely on exact redstone keep the official server jar.

  2. Choose the version together

Every player needs the same Minecraft version as the server, so agree before you update.

  3. Back up before updating

A world opened in a newer version cannot safely go back to an older one.

Questions about vanilla Minecraft hosting

How much RAM does a vanilla Minecraft server need?

A vanilla Minecraft server needs about 2 GB of RAM plus 1 GB for every three players: 4 GB for up to six players and 8 GB for up to eighteen.

Is a vanilla server cheaper to host?

Yes, because it needs the least RAM of any setup. Up to six players fit on a 4 GB plan, which costs €3.20 a month at Cheapest Minecraft Hosting in Poland and €7.95 on the Performance line at Lodehost and Astroworld Hosting.

Can I use datapacks on a vanilla server?

Yes. Datapacks run on the official server and on Paper. Put them in the datapacks folder of your world and run /reload or restart the server; players do not need to install anything.

Do I need Paper for a vanilla Minecraft server?

No. The official server software from Mojang works fine for a small group. Paper uses the server's resources more efficiently, which helps with more players, but it changes a few redstone mechanics that technical players rely on.

Can players with the normal game join a Paper server?

Yes. Paper, Spigot and Purpur servers work with the normal Minecraft client, so your players install nothing. That is different on a modded Fabric or Forge server, where players need the same mods unless every mod runs on the server only.

What is a vanilla Minecraft server?

A vanilla Minecraft server runs the game exactly as Mojang releases it, with no mods or plugins, on the official server jar. Players join with the normal game, and datapacks can still change recipes and rules.

Where do I download the vanilla Minecraft server jar?

From minecraft.net, where Mojang publishes the server jar for each Java Edition release. On a hosted plan you do not need to download it: the panel installs the version you choose.

Can I host a vanilla Minecraft server for free?

Yes, for a small group: free hosts such as Aternos and Minehut run vanilla servers, but the server stops or sleeps when nobody is online. A paid 4 GB plan for up to six players costs €3.20 a month. The limits of Aternos, Minehut and Server.pro are listed on free Minecraft server hosting.
