Paper Minecraft server hosting

Paper Minecraft server hosting needs about 8 GB of RAM for ten players with a few plugins, because Paper is the server software most plugin servers run: the Minecraft server with plugin support, made faster. Here is how to host a Paper server and when Purpur or Spigot is the better pick.

Prices checked on 7 October 2026 on the hosts' own order pages. All prices include VAT.

The short answer

A Paper server needs about 5 GB of RAM for five players, 7 GB for ten and 12 GB for twenty with a few plugins, so an 8 or 12 GB plan for most groups. Paper is free, runs almost every Spigot and Bukkit plugin, and all three hosts we compare offer it as server software.

What does a Paper server need?

  • Plugins, not mods

Paper runs Bukkit, Spigot and Paper plugins. Mods need Fabric, Forge or NeoForge.

  • 8 GB for most groups

7 GB for ten players with a few plugins, plus a gigabyte for every extra 10 to 25.

  • A fast core

Paper makes ticks cheaper, and a fast core keeps them that way with farms and redstone.

Paper runs plugins, not mods, so players join with the normal game and install nothing.

What is a Paper Minecraft server?

A Paper server is a Minecraft Java server that runs PaperMC, a faster version of Spigot with support for plugins. Paper loads chunks in the background, makes entities and redstone cost less and fixes many bugs, and it adds settings for things like how many mobs spawn per chunk and how long items stay on the ground. Almost every Bukkit and Spigot plugin runs on it, and it is what most plugin authors test on. If you are not sure which server software to pick for a plugin server, pick Paper.

Paper vs Purpur vs Spigot

Choose Paper for a normal plugin server, Purpur if you want to tweak gameplay, and Spigot only when an old plugin demands it. The three are built on top of each other and share one plugin system:

  • Spigot is the classic plugin server. It is stable and runs every Bukkit plugin, but it has fallen behind on performance.
  • Paper is Spigot made faster, with more settings and bug fixes. It switches off a few bugs some players rely on, such as TNT duplication; most of them can be switched back on in config/paper-global.yml under the unsupported settings.
  • Purpur is Paper with hundreds of extra gameplay options in purpur.yml, such as rideable mobs and spawner pickup. With its options left alone, it performs like Paper.

Paper, Purpur and Spigot read the same world, so you can switch between them and keep your builds, inventories and plugins. Folia, a Paper variant that spreads the world over several cores, is made for huge servers, and most plugins do not run on it without changes.

How to make a Paper server

To make a Paper server, choose Paper as the server software and add plugins once it runs:

  1. Order a plan with enough RAM for your players and plugins, and choose Paper as the server software.
  2. Pick the Minecraft version your plugins support. The hosts set the matching Java version with it.
  3. Install plugins from the panel or upload their jars to the plugins folder, then restart the server.
  4. Set up permissions and a whitelist before you share the address, for example with LuckPerms.

PaperMC server plugins

A PaperMC server runs Bukkit, Spigot and Paper plugins, which you find on Modrinth, Hangar, SpigotMC and CurseForge. The usual first plugins are EssentialsX for homes and teleports, LuckPerms for ranks, a claims plugin against griefing and Geyser with Floodgate if Bedrock players should join. Astroworld Hosting installs plugins from a catalogue of 510 vetted projects and works out which jar fits your Minecraft version. How much RAM does a Paper server need?

A Paper server needs about 5 GB of RAM for five players, 7 GB for ten and 12 GB for twenty with a handful of plugins. Every extra 10 to 25 plugins add about a gigabyte, and a web map or extra worlds add more.

Paper server settings for less lag

Paper's own settings live in config/paper-global.yml and config/paper-world-defaults.yml, next to the vanilla server.properties. The settings that help most are the simulation distance in server.properties, which decides how far around players the world keeps ticking, the mob spawn limits per chunk and how long dropped items stay loaded. Change one at a time and check the result with spark, so you know what helped.

Before you buy a Paper server

  1. Start on Paper

Paper runs almost every Spigot and Bukkit plugin; move to Purpur only if you want its extra settings.

  2. Plugins for your version

Take plugins from Hangar, Modrinth or SpigotMC, in the build for your Minecraft version.

  3. Keep a technical world on vanilla

Paper changes a few redstone mechanics, so technical players may prefer the official server jar.

Questions about Paper server hosting

How much RAM does a Paper server need?

About 5 GB for five players, 7 GB for ten and 12 GB for twenty with a handful of plugins. Add about a gigabyte for every extra 10 to 25 plugins.

Is Paper better than Spigot?

For almost every server, yes. Paper is built on Spigot, runs nearly all of its plugins and makes chunks, entities and redstone cheaper. Spigot mostly makes sense when one old plugin demands it.

Is Purpur faster than Paper?

No. With its options left at their defaults, Purpur performs like Paper. It adds gameplay options, and some of them add load of their own, so switch on only what you use.

Can a Paper server run mods?

No. Paper runs plugins. Mods need Fabric, Forge or NeoForge, and switching to one of those stops your plugins from loading.

Is PaperMC free?

Yes. Paper is free and open source. You pay for the server it runs on, not for Paper, and all three hosts we compare offer it as server software.

How much does a Paper server cost?

An 8 GB Paper server costs €6.40 a month at Cheapest Minecraft Hosting and €12.95 at Lodehost. With reserved Ryzen 9 threads, 8 GB costs €15.95.

Can I host a Paper server for free?

Yes, for a small group: free hosts such as Aternos and Minehut run Paper, but the server stops or sleeps when nobody is online. A paid 8 GB Paper plan costs €6.40 a month. Free hosts and their rules are compared on free Minecraft server hosting.
