Better MC server hosting

Better MC server hosting needs about 13 GB of RAM for five players, because BMC4, the Forge edition most groups play, is a pack of 368 mods built around exploring. Here is which of the four Better MC editions to put on a server, how much RAM it needs and why the version on Modrinth can keep your friends out.

Two RAM sticks among Minecraft grass blocks: memory for a modpack server

The short answer

A Better MC server needs about 13 GB of RAM for five players, 18 GB for ten and 28 GB for twenty, so a 16, 24 or 32 GB plan. Run BMC4 on Forge 1.20.1 unless your group wants Minecraft 1.21.1, then BMC5 on NeoForge. Install it from CurseForge, where BMC4 and BMC5 are newer than on Modrinth.

What does a Better MC server need?

A Better MC server needs 3 things: 16 GB of RAM for a small group, the same edition and version as your players and fast storage for a world that keeps growing.

  • 16 GB for a small group

About 13 GB for five players by our rule, and 18 GB once ten people play, which means a 24 GB plan.

  • One edition for everyone

BMC4, BMC5, BMC3 and BMC2 are separate packs, so the server and every player run the same one.

  • Fast storage

Every chunk a player explores is generated with extra structures, then written to disk and read back later.

Better MC gets heavy when players spread out, so five friends who travel together need less than five who each head in their own direction.

How much RAM does a Better MC server need?

A Better MC server needs about 13 GB of RAM for five players, 18 GB for ten and 28 GB for twenty. That holds for BMC4 and BMC5 alike: the Modrinth copy of BMC4 version 59 lists 368 mods, and Astroworld Hosting counted 368 in BMC4 version 61 and 350 in BMC5 version 53. Packs that size start at about 8 GB in our rule, plus about 1 GB per player.

Astroworld Hosting's own Better MC page plans 6 GB for up to three players, 8 GB for four to eight and 12 GB for nine to sixteen, and its numbers assume a group that plays near each other. Ours leave room for the other kind. Modrinth marks 75 of the 368 mods in BMC4 as client-only, so the server loads fewer than the list shows, but each player who sets off alone makes the server generate and hold a fresh ring of chunks.

BMC4 vs BMC5: which Better MC edition for a server?

BMC4 is the better Better MC edition for most servers: it runs Forge for Minecraft 1.20.1, has 18.6 million downloads on CurseForge and got version 62 on 6 October 2026. BMC5 runs NeoForge for Minecraft 1.21.1 and is the one to pick if your group wants the newer game. The two Fabric editions update less often. All four are separate packs from Luna Pixel Studios with their own mod lists, so the server runs one edition and every player joins with that same one.

Better MC server pack: CurseForge or Modrinth?

The Better MC server pack to use is the one on CurseForge, because three of the four editions are newer there than on Modrinth: BMC5 is at version 53 on CurseForge and still at version 31 on Modrinth, and only BMC2 is the same on both. A server installed from CurseForge and a friend who installed from Modrinth end up on different versions with different mods, and the friend is refused at the door with a list of mismatched mods.

So pick the source first and tell your group which one it is. A one-click install covers the rest: Astroworld Hosting and Lodehost install CurseForge modpacks in one click, and Cheapest Minecraft Hosting from its Mods tab, with the loader set to match the edition.

How to make a Better MC server

A Better MC server takes 4 steps once your group has agreed on an edition:

  1. Order a 16 GB plan for up to five players, with Forge as the server type for BMC4 or NeoForge for BMC5.
  2. Install the edition and version your players have from CurseForge in the panel. The installer picks the matching Minecraft version.
  3. Add Chunky to the server and pre-generate. Better MC does not ship it, and players do not need it. In the console, run chunky spawn, then chunky radius 2000 and chunky start.
  4. Send your friends the address and the exact edition and version, such as BMC4 v62, so they install the same pack in the CurseForge app.

Why a Better MC server lags when players explore

A Better MC server lags when players explore because every new chunk passes through dozens of structure and biome mods, from When Dungeons Arise to Biomes O' Plenty, before anyone can walk on it. Machines are not the problem in this pack. New land is, and it is generated on the server while everyone else waits.

Pre-generating takes that work out of play time. A radius of 2,000 blocks around spawn is 62,500 chunks, so start Chunky the evening before you open the server. Leave the extra dimensions alone: the Aether, the Everbright and Everdawn from Blue Skies and the Otherside from Deeper and Darker cost almost nothing until someone travels there. For the rest, lower the view distance to 8 and use spark, which the pack includes, to find what is slow.

Better MC world sharing or a server?

Better MC world sharing is free, but the world is only online while the player who shares it is in the game. BMC4's CurseForge page lists built-in, free world sharing, so a group can try the pack together without renting anything. The shared world runs on that player's computer, next to their own game, and it closes when they quit. A server keeps the world open for everyone, at any hour, and does not lean on one friend's PC to carry 368 mods twice.

How to claim chunks on a Better MC server

Better MC servers claim chunks with Open Parties and Claims, which lets each player claim 500 chunks and force-load 10 of them by default. The mod comes with BMC4, works with the Xaero's Minimap and World Map that the pack also includes, and by default tries to protect claimed land from other players. A server admin can raise or lower those limits in the mod's server config.

Before you buy a Better MC server

Before you buy a Better MC server, check 3 things: which edition your friends have installed, where they got it from and how far apart they like to explore.

  1. The same edition

A BMC4 player cannot join a BMC5 server, even though both are called Better MC.

  2. The same source

CurseForge has newer versions of BMC4 and BMC5 than Modrinth, so the server and the players install from one place.

  3. Pre-generate first

Better MC does not include Chunky, so add it to the server and generate the land around spawn before you play.

Questions about Better MC server hosting

How much RAM does a Better MC server need?

Plan on 16 GB for up to five players: a Better MC server uses about 13 GB for five, 18 GB for ten and 28 GB for twenty. BMC4 and BMC5 both have around 350 to 370 mods, so the numbers are the same for either edition.

Is BMC4 or BMC5 better for a server?

BMC4 for most groups: it is by far the most downloaded edition and gets new versions about once a month. Choose BMC5 if your group wants Minecraft 1.21.1. Whichever you pick, every player needs that same edition and version.

Why can't my friends join my Better MC server?

Usually because they run a different edition or version than the server. BMC4 and BMC5 do not mix, and on Modrinth both are older than on CurseForge, so a friend who installed from Modrinth is often several versions behind.

Can Bedrock players join a Better MC server?

No. Better MC's new blocks, creatures and dimensions come from Java mods that every player has to load in their own game, and Bedrock Edition cannot load Java mods. Your group needs Java Edition on a PC or Mac.

How much does a Better MC server cost?

A 16 GB Better MC server for up to five players costs €12.80 a month at Cheapest Minecraft Hosting. Ten players need 24 GB, which costs €19.20 there, or €46.95 for Lodehost's Premium plan on the Performance line.

Can I host a Better MC server for free?

Only while you play. The world sharing built into BMC4 is free, but the world goes offline when the player who shares it quits. Free hosts are another option, but they stop or pause the server when nobody is online, and few give a pack of 368 mods the memory it needs. See free Minecraft server hosting for how they work.
