How much RAM does an FTB server need?
An FTB server needs about 13 GB of RAM for five players, 18 GB for ten and 28 GB for twenty on a pack of 300 mods or more, which is where most current Feed The Beast packs sit. That is our rule for large packs: about 8 GB before anyone joins and about 1 GB per player. Feed The Beast lists its own minimum and recommended RAM on each pack's page, usually between 4 and 8 GB and without a player count. Ours leave room for a team that has been automating for weeks.
| Players online | RAM needed | Plan size | Lowest price for that size |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2 to 5 | 13 GB | 16 GB | CheapestMinecraftHosting Pro, €12.80 a month in Poland (Warsaw) |
| 6 to 10 | 18 GB | 24 GB | CheapestMinecraftHosting Crew, €19.20 a month in Poland (Warsaw) |
| 11 to 20 | 28 GB | 32 GB | CheapestMinecraftHosting Guild, €25.60 a month in Poland (Warsaw) |
The skyblock-style packs, StoneBlock, Skies and OceanBlock, need little memory for new land because their worlds are stone, sky or water. Their load follows the base: machines, farms and Compact Machines packed into a small space that all tick together.
Popular FTB modpacks for a server
The current Feed The Beast packs for a server are StoneBlock 4, Skies 2, OceanBlock 2 and Direwolf20 1.21, all on NeoForge 1.21.1. These are their editions and the mods Astroworld Hosting counted in each newest release on 27 September 2026:
| FTB modpack | Minecraft and loader | Mods |
|---|---|---|
| FTB StoneBlock 4 | 1.21.1, NeoForge | 411 |
| FTB Skies 2 | 1.21.1, NeoForge | 433 |
| FTB OceanBlock 2 | 1.21.1, NeoForge | 309 |
| FTB Presents Direwolf20 1.21 | 1.21.1, NeoForge | 268 |
| FTB Skies | 1.19.2, Forge | 325 |
| FTB StoneBlock 3 | 1.18.2, Forge | 222 |
| FTB Presents Direwolf20 1.12 | 1.12.2, Forge | 154 |
Direwolf20 has no quest book and no set goal, so its load depends entirely on what your group builds. OceanBlock 2 numbers its releases like Minecraft versions, but every release runs on Minecraft 1.21.1, so compare the pack version with your players, not the Minecraft one.
How to make an FTB server
An FTB server takes four steps, whichever Feed The Beast pack you choose:
- Order a plan that fits the pack, 16 GB for up to five players on a pack of around 400 mods, with NeoForge for the 1.21.1 packs or Forge for the older ones.
- Install the pack in one click. Astroworld Hosting and Lodehost install modpacks from Feed The Beast, CurseForge and Modrinth, and set the loader and Java for you.
- Check the pack's server notes. StoneBlock 4, for example, needs command blocks turned on in server.properties.
- Start the server and let your friends join with the same pack version from the FTB app or CurseForge.
FTB server files and the FTB app
FTB server files are on the Feed The Beast website under Versions on each pack's page, as an installer for your operating system that downloads the pack into a folder. The FTB app has the same Server files button for each version. On a hosted server you rarely need either, because the panel's installer fetches the files for the version you pick, configs included. Older editions such as Direwolf20 1.12 come from CurseForge with a server pack of their own.
FTB server for friends: teams, claims and backups
An FTB server suits a group of friends because the current packs are built for teams. FTB Team Bases gives every team its own base in StoneBlock 4, Skies 2 and OceanBlock 2, and packs such as OceanBlock 2 add FTB Chunks to claim land and FTB Ranks to give trusted players more rights. StoneBlock and Skies 2 also ship Feed The Beast's backup mod, which keeps copies inside the server folder. Next to the daily backups of the host, those copies can fill the disk after a few weeks, so trim them now and then.
