How much RAM does an RLCraft server need?
An RLCraft server needs about 12 GB of RAM for five players, 17 GB for ten players and 27 GB for twenty. RLCraft has more than 120 mods, which puts it in our rule for packs of around 200 mods: about 7 GB before anyone joins, plus about 1 GB per player. The players matter so much because every one of them keeps chunks loaded, and in RLCraft those chunks are full of mobs that hunt, fly and burn things down.
| Players online | RAM needed | Plan size | Lowest price for that size |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2 to 5 | 12 GB | 12 GB | CheapestMinecraftHosting Builder, €9.60 a month in Poland (Warsaw) |
| 6 to 10 | 17 GB | 24 GB | CheapestMinecraftHosting Crew, €19.20 a month in Poland (Warsaw) |
| 11 to 20 | 27 GB | 32 GB | CheapestMinecraftHosting Guild, €25.60 a month in Poland (Warsaw) |
Astroworld Hosting lists RLCraft at 6 GB for up to four players and 8 GB for five to ten, and says most RLCraft groups run on its 12 GB Standard plan. That matches our figure for five players. Our larger numbers for bigger groups come from what happens when players split up and explore in different directions.
RLCraft server requirements
An RLCraft server needs Forge for Minecraft 1.12.2, Java 8 and a fast processor core. Java is picked for you: the hosts we compare set the Java version from the Minecraft version, so a 1.12.2 pack does not fail on a runtime that is too new. The processor matters because RLCraft's heaviest mods are about living things. Lycanites Mobs adds dozens of hostile creatures to every biome, and the dragons from Ice and Fire can tear up whole areas in a fight. All of that AI runs on the server's main thread.
How to make an RLCraft server
An RLCraft server takes four steps, and the panel picks Java 8 for you:
- Order a plan with 12 GB or more for up to five players, with Forge 1.12.2 as the server software.
- Install RLCraft from the panel. Astroworld Hosting and Lodehost install modpacks from CurseForge in one click, with the Forge build the pack needs. Lodehost lists 1.12.2 among its classic Forge versions when you order.
- Start the server and give it time. Forge 1.12.2 takes several minutes to load all the mods on the first start.
- Let your friends join with the same RLCraft version, installed from the CurseForge app.
RLCraft server pack and setup tips
The RLCraft server pack is the set of server files on CurseForge for each release, with a Forge installer and without the client-only mods. If you set it up by hand, upload the server pack through the file manager, extract it and point the start command at the Forge jar. Then change three things before your players arrive:
- Lower the view distance to 8 or 10 chunks. RLCraft chunks carry structures and spawn tables, so every extra chunk costs more than in vanilla.
- Use tuned Java flags such as Aikar's flags, which keep garbage collection pauses short with thousands of entities.
- Turn down Lycanites spawn rates in its config if players report mob lag. The file is in the config folder.
RLCraft Dregora server
RLCraft Dregora is a newer take on RLCraft with a custom world, also on Forge 1.12.2, and it is heavier: Astroworld Hosting counted 214 mods and lists it at 6 to 10 GB by group size. Plan one size up from the original pack for the same group. Pre-generate its world with a tool made for 1.12.2 before the group spreads out.
